A VERY IMPRESSED TEMPLE checked out clothes in various stages of construction in Cassie’s sewing room, while Cassie fiddled with a dress form.

“I’ll get your measurements on this and then sketch something up.”

“I appreciate it, I do, but don’t waste your time. I've tried it all. Headdresses. Short skirts. Long skirts. Spike heels I can barely walk in much less dance. Clothes cannot make you taller.”

She spotted the wild rose shoes on a shelf in a clear plastic box. “Beautiful,” she said, with a bit of wistfulness in her voice.

While scary managers and elevators might not be her battlefield, this room was Cassie's arena, her personal Studio 3. Her shyness melted away as she positioned Temple shoulder-to-shoulder next to the dress form.

“Headdresses and all that don't work on short women. They just make you look like you're playing dress-up.”

Temple's eyes welled. She looked away. No one saw her cry about being short. Cassie sketched, focused on her work.

Temple let out a breath and put on a smile. “Now my idea is, we stop wasting your time, order pizza and find a movie.”

Cassie held up her sketches of a body-hugging design: front and back views. An asymmetrical hem at mid-calf allowed free movement of the dancer's legs. A silvery vine-like pattern led up the body and spilled over one shoulder and along one arm.

A delicate replica of the vine pattern appeared one one side of the hairstyle of the figure. Not a headdress, but a clip, an elegant tracing of silver, accenting the face as well as complimenting and completing the design on the dress.

Temple was stunned.

“The silver pattern will catch the light. Lead the eye vertically,” Cassie explained, following the line with the pencil tip. “We’ll need to drape some fabrics over you to find the right color. I’d like yellow, but then the vine would have to be dark. Red can be gorgeous with silver art. I’ll maybe do wide pleating so the skirt expands during the turns, but falls back into clean lines. It’ll accentuate how slim and elegant your body is. This is just preliminary, of course, we can do whatever you want.”

She stopped, looking to Temple for a reaction.

Temple seemed to have become the shy one. “You'd make that for me?”

“If we get the design finalized tonight, you can have it for Halloween.”

Temple nodded, not trusting herself to speak.

Cassie grabbed her cell. “What do you like on your pizza?”

Temple cleared her throat and found herself again. “I’ll do that, I’m paying. You go back to work.”

Cassie handed her the phone and bent over her drawing table feeling … happy.
